Miss Earth 2013 Review: South Africa - Turkey

89 delegates arrived in Manila in early November to compete for the Miss Earth 2013 title. On Saturday (December 7) 88 (Miss New Zealand had to withdraw after she got sick in the Philippines)of them will step on stage hoping to become the 13th Miss Earth.

Even though there is a really strong group of delegate, I must say that it is very hard to follow the pageant after last year's scandal. I actually didn't really follow it that closely this year because that scandal left a bitter taste in my mouth which will probably remain there for quite some time. One the one hand I did decide though to give them a fair shot hoping they will redeem themselves. And on the other hand, I also cover this pageant because my blog is fairly young and I need the hits. I hope this organization will pull themselves together and strive towards fairness and transparency. Integrity and respect can be much more valuable (in the long term) than money gained from selling a title.

Back to the delegates, who don't really need to be involved in all of this. I must say that the quality has improved a lot the last five years and this is probably one of their best bunches yet. Here's my review:

******: POTENTIAL WINNER
*****: POTENTIAL RUNNER-UP
****: POTENTIAL TOP 8 FINALIST
***: POTENTIAL TOP 16 FINALIST
**: UNLIKELY TO PLACE
*: HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO PLACE

SOUTH AFRICA: ASHANTI MBANGA *****
I don’t find Ashanti to be the most beautiful in the African group but I do feel she is probably the only one who is the complete package. She is tall, striking, has a body to die for, she’s well spoken, and she’s done some wonderful work to promote the cause. I believe she’ll definitely be up there and if she performs well on the night, she can grab an elemental title.

SOUTH SUDAN: GLORIA KARSIS ***

Personally, I find her stunning. Probably the most attractive of the African group for me this year. But South Africa is strong too and probably more well-groomed. Gloria represented her country really well and being one of the top 15 in talent is a great achievement.

SPAIN: CRISTINA MARTINEZ ***

Cristina has the height and the beauty to do well in the competition. She is not one of the major favorites in this competition but she has a very good shot at making the top 16.

SRI LANKA: SOLANGE KRISTINA GUNAWIJEYA *

It’s a strong group and I think Solange just got lost in the crowd. Hopefully she made lots of new friends and she had wonderful experiences.

SWEDEN: DENICE ANDREE ****

I actually thought Denice had a pretty good shot at winning Miss Earth before the start of the pageant. Now I feel that she was outperformed by a handful of stunners. I am always left wanting more with her, hoping she’ll go into full fighting mode. She is still in with a shot and could go all the way to the top 8 but I think there are other ladies who will be fighting it out to win this thing.

SWITZERLAND: DJOA STRASSBURG ***

Djoa is a really pretty girl and she has a good shot at making the top 16. In a less competitive year, she could have been gunning for a top 8 spot. This year, however, is a strong year and she could sneak into the top 16 or be totally left out.

TAHITI: MAEVA SIMONIN **

Tahiti returned to Miss Earth this year with Maeva Simonin. She is a worthy delegate and can feel proud of being in the top 15 of the talent competition and bagging one of the sponsors’ awards. I don’t see her placing in the top 16 though.

TANZANIA: CLARA NOOR **

I’m a huge fan of Clara’s beauty and I think she is extremely striking and memorable. Even though I am pretty sure that her beauty might be a tad too exotic for the Miss Earth judges, I’m glad she actually got some recognition in the form of a sponsor’s award and a nod for her national costume.

THAILAND: PUNIKA KULSOONTORNRUT ******

Miss Thailand is one of the biggest favorites to win the Miss Earth title and rightly so. She’s absolutely gorgeous. After Thailand was shockingly left out of the top 16 just like Czech Republic in 2011, can this country come back and win it all this year? If the judges want to crown an Asian lady, this girl might be the best bet.

TURKEY: EZGI AVCI ****

Turkey was tipped to do really well last year but they eventually failed to make the cut. This year they sent another strong contender and she could actually do better than her predecessor and make the top 16 and with a bit of luck, the top 8.
