Miss Universe 2013 Review: Czech Republic - Gabon

Miss Universe is being hosted in Russia for the very first time this year. It's nice to see Miss Universe being hosted somewhere else even though the pageant has lost a lot of it's glamor. The activities seem to be done on a shoestring budget, but they do have one of the best stages in recent years. I do hope that the Miss Universe Organization will start to rethink they way they do business. There are almost no more prizes that are really worthwhile and I think they really need to make the prize package a bit more lucrative again. I think they the organization needs to move away from the cheap thrills sleazy publicity angel and start building the image of the brand again.

As for the girls, 86 girls are competing for the 62nd Miss Universe title. I was a little disappointed by a lot of the favorites. The girls I thought would do really well didn't perform as well or made poor styling choices. Overall, I think it's a good group of girls and I think there are a group of about 30 girls who could be in contention to do really well. Now, let's take a look at the beauties vying for this year's Miss Universe title:

POSSIBLE WINNER - ******
POSSIBLE TOP 5 FINALIST - *****
POSSIBLE TOP 10 SEMI-FINALIST - ****
POSSIBLE TOP 15 QUARTER FINALIST - ***
UNLIKELY TO PLACE - **
HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO PLACE - *

CZECH REPUBLIC: GABRIELA KRATOCHVILOVA ******

OK, I LOVE THIS GIRL. She’s so photogenic, telegenic, and she has an amazing personality. She’s sexy, pretty, sweet, cute… so versatile. If the judges are going for a totally unconventional look, then the Czech Republic might have their first Miss Universe. I’ll be delighted if she wins Miss Universe. (I do think she should change her hair for the finals and also get a better gone - but she's in with a good shot!)

DENMARK: CECILIA IFTIKHAR *

When she arrived, I initially thought she’s much better than I anticipated. Yes, she’s a beautiful girl. But she is not strong enough to fight for a spot in the top 16. Her inconsistency might be due to a lack of preparation time but given the fact that she has prior pageant experience, she should have stood out more.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: *****

Here’s another girl I just can’t get enough of this year. I love her unconventional beauty. She’s vibrant and stunning and I think it’s time for her country to do well again. I thought she was on fire during the swimsuit parade but didn't like her evening gown look. She deserves to do well though. Her resemblance to Denny Mendez (Italy 1997) must be noted. Denny did really well but is it a look that can still work at Miss Universe? I think so!

ECUADOR: CONSTANZA BAEZ ***
There are times that I think Constanza is just breathtaking but then in the next photo she looks kind of old and plastic. I think inconsistency is her worst enemy. Yet, she has improved since her crowning. And it really showed during the preliminaries. I think she had two very strong performances. Not outstanding but really strong.

EL SALVADOR: ALBA DELGADO **

I think Alba is adorable and I’d put her somewhere in the middle of the pack. In a smaller pageant, she might have fared much better. But here she was just one of the pretty faces who got lost in the crowd.

ESTONIA: KRISTINA KARJALAINEN *

Kristina is a very sexy blonde – but does her look translate well to the beauty pageant stage? I don’t think so. I think she has done her best but I think there are much stronger competitors out there. If she places, I’ll be a tad disappointed.

ETHIOPIA: MHADERE TIGABE *

Mhadere is one of the weakest links in this year’s group. She also didn’t smile a lot and in her video, she didn’t show much personality at all. Ethiopia has stunning women and I would like to see one of them do really well here one day.

FINLAND: LOTTA HINTSA **

In terms of sheer natural beauty, this girl is a doll. With those stunning blue eyes and doll-like face, you can’t help but stare at her. With a bit of Latina fire, she could have been a fierce competitor. I loved her swimsuit performance but her EG look was quite disappointing. I could see her doing really well in a pageant like Miss International.

FRANCE: HINARANI DE LONGEAUX ***

If you asked me 6 months ago, I would have said she is the next Miss Universe. Sadly, I’ve fallen off this bandwagon. I think styling was Hinarani’s biggest problem. She looked amazing at times and then harsh at times. It’s like her advisors in Paris did not know what’s the best look for her. After the preliminaries, I feel that she’s good enough to make the top 10 but I would not be surprised if she gets left out of the top 15 either.

GABON: JENNIFER ONDO ***

Jennifer has grown on me and I think she has represented her country well. I think she is one of the strongest girls from Africa but I don’t think the African group is particularly strong this year. She might be surprise in the top 15 though.
