Miss Universe 2013 Review: New Zealand to Puerto Rico

Miss Universe is being hosted in Russia for the very first time this year. It's nice to see Miss Universe being hosted somewhere else even though the pageant has lost a lot of it's glamor. The activities seem to be done on a shoestring budget, but they do have one of the best stages in recent years. I do hope that the Miss Universe Organization will start to rethink they way they do business. There are almost no more prizes that are really worthwhile and I think they really need to make the prize package a bit more lucrative again. I think they the organization needs to move away from the cheap thrills sleazy publicity angel and start building the image of the brand again.

As for the girls, 86 girls are competing for the 62nd Miss Universe title. I was a little disappointed by a lot of the favorites. The girls I thought would do really well didn't perform as well or made poor styling choices. Overall, I think it's a good group of girls and I think there are a group of about 30 girls who could be in contention to do really well. Now, let's take a look at the beauties vying for this year's Miss Universe title:

POSSIBLE WINNER - ******
POSSIBLE TOP 5 FINALIST - *****
POSSIBLE TOP 10 SEMI-FINALIST - ****
POSSIBLE TOP 15 QUARTER FINALIST - ***
UNLIKELY TO PLACE - **
HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO PLACE - *

NEW ZEALAND: HOLLY MICHELLE CASSIDY **

Holly did not look out of place in the Miss Universe lineup. There were a few photos where I actually thought, “Wow, she’s looking better than expected!” I think she looked elegant at all the events she attended so kudos to her for using the short time she had to ensure she was prepared really well.

NICARAGUA: NASTASSJA BOLIVAR ****
Be afraid. Be very afraid! To be honest: I was not a fan of her look at first. Actually for the record, I still find her features a bit too harsh and I think she looks really plastic. That being said, there’s absolutely no denying that she killed it during the preliminaries. I would not be surprised to see her doing well in the competition!!! I was majorly impressed by her performance.

NIGERIA: STEPHANIE OKWU **

I don’t think she’s the best Nigeria has ever sent but I do think she did a commendable job. I actually liked her preliminary performances. She was good on stage and her gown was lovely. I think she really did the best she could but it won’t be enough to secure a placement. Better than expected though!

NORWAY: MARI CHAUHAN *
Even though I find her features incredibly interesting, I think she’s way out of her depth here. Will Norway ever produce a girl that will do well at Miss Universe again? I hope she at least had a good time in Russia.

PANAMA: CAROLINA BRID ****
I think Carolina is stunning and based on her preliminary performances, I would say she’s also really well prepared. She definitely ticks all the boxes but there’s something missing. I miss something  that will set her apart from the rest of the group. Still, she could be in the top 10 for sure.

PARAGUAY: GUADALUPE GONZALEZ ****
I absolutely loved Guadalupe before the pageant and had her as one of my top 5. Then after her arrival, she definitely fizzled a bit. I pretty much wrote her off as a girl who we’ll all say could and probably should have done better. However, on the night of the preliminaries she definitely showed up fighting. I loved her in swimsuit and gown and I think she’s back in the game!

PERU: CINDY MEIJA ***
Cindy has the sparkle that some of the other delegates are missing. I actually always thought she was pretty but I growing fonder and fonder of her. She didn’t really put a foot wrong and all and she is one of the most consistent ones of the group! Will that be enough for her to place? I am not so sure but I won’t be surprised to hear her name being called either.

PHILIPPINES: ARIELLA ARIDA ****
I’ll probably be slaughtered for this but I am not as crazy about her as I was about the last 3 Filipino representatives at Miss Universe. Maybe I’m also making the mistake of comparing her to Megan Young who I think is one of the most gorgeous girls ever. Ariella is definitely strong enough to place but I am just don’t find her to be one of the best of the group. I think she’s pretty enough but she lacks the personality and stage presence the last 3 girls had.

POLAND: PAULINA KRUPINSKA ******
Since the moment Paulina was crowned, I’ve been a major fan. Actually I fell in love with her the first time I saw the delegates competing for Miss Polonia 2012. I just find her so stunningly beautiful and she has most gorgeous eyes and stunning style. She looks hot, glamorous, sexy, fierce, sweet, innocent, friendly, and approachable all at the same time. I think she has a very versatile look. However, I must say that her preliminary performance was underwhelming. I’m still hoping she could come back fighting on the final night and win the whole thing though. I adore her.

PUERTO RICO: MONIC PEREZ *****
Monic makes it all look so effortless. She sizzles and stuns without even trying too hard like only the best of the best beauty queens can. Even though I don’t think she’s the most stunning girl in the group, I still think she has everything it takes to get that crown!
