Miss Universe 2013 Review: Brazil - Curacao

Miss Universe is being hosted in Russia for the very first time this year. It's nice to see Miss Universe being hosted somewhere else even though the pageant has lost a lot of it's glamor. The activities seem to be done on a shoestring budget, but they do have one of the best stages in recent years. I do hope that the Miss Universe Organization will start to rethink they way they do business. There are almost no more prizes that are really worthwhile and I think they really need to make the prize package a bit more lucrative again. I think they the organization needs to move away from the cheap thrills sleazy publicity angel and start building the image of the brand again.

As for the girls, 86 girls are competing for the 62nd Miss Universe title. I was a little disappointed by a lot of the favorites. The girls I thought would do really well didn't perform as well or made poor styling choices. Overall, I think it's a good group of girls and I think there are a group of about 30 girls who could be in contention to do really well. Now, let's take a look at the beauties vying for this year's Miss Universe title:

POSSIBLE WINNER - ******
POSSIBLE TOP 5 FINALIST - *****
POSSIBLE TOP 10 SEMI-FINALIST - ****
POSSIBLE TOP 15 QUARTER FINALIST - ***
UNLIKELY TO PLACE - **
HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO PLACE - *

BRAZIL: JAKELYN OLIVEIRA ******
Jakelyn is stunning. She’s young, fresh, and full of energy... and her body is absolutely unbelievable. She is a breath of fresh air in my opinion and I think that if a girl from South America is to win, it could be her. The place where she comes alive is the stage and at Miss Universe this is most important. Keep an eye on this beauty – she could be the next Miss Universe.

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS: SHARIE DE CASTRO *
I actually feel sorry for Sharie. She looked insecure and nervous most of the time. I hope she didn’t find this experience overwhelming. I know it was a tough road for her to get there so well done on completing this challenge. Btw, I think her national costume is stunning and her choice of gown was great.

BULGARIA: VENETA KRASTEVA *
I think Veneta is a bit out of her depth at this pageant. Bulgaria usually doesn’t really send strong competitors and this year is no exception. I wish Veneta would also have smiled a bit more. She looked quite bored and/or unhappy in most of her photos. I hope she had a great experience in Russia though!

CANADA: RIZA SANTOS **
My heart is still bleeding for Denise Garrido but let’s not go there. Riza occasionally looked great but most of the time she looked overcooked. I think she’s just had too much pageant experience – and she doesn’t come across as being fresh and natural anymore. You can’t deny that she’s a beautiful lady but she just doesn’t excite me. She might be a MUO pick based on all the publicity the mess-up in her country’s national pageant got.

CHILE: MARIA JESUS MATTHEI ***
I don’t find Maria Jesus drop dead gorgeous but there’s definitely something about her. She’s really striking and I’m sure she would make for a great fashion model. She also oozes charm and charisma. I think if she gives it her all, she could definitely be a surprise inclusion in the top 15.

CHINA: JIN YE **
Jin is also more of a model than a beauty queen. My main problem with her is that she looks quite old at times. She doesn’t look and fresh in most of her photos. Honestly speaking, she's not one of my favorites but she really worked it in the preliminaries. Definitely much better than I expected.  I love her national costume!

COLOMBIA: LUCIA ALDANA ****
I was a bit disappointed because I was expecting Lucia to be a fierce competitor. On the contrary, I found her quite withdrawn or reserved and she didn’t really grab my attention. Then came the preliminaries and I really took notice of her. While most of the girls lacked stage presence, I felt that she actually was quite good on stage. We could see her in the top 10 for sure.

COSTA RICA: FABIANA GRANADOS ****
Fabiana checks all the boxes. Tall enough, stunningly beautiful, great body, nice personality… but she doesn’t have the sash factor. I am still hoping that she will make it. She can either do really well or she could be one of those beauties that we’ll all agree should have made it. I’m hoping that she’ll at least get a top 10 finish because she gave two great performances in the preliminaries.

CROATIA: MELITA FABECIC *****
Melita’s sultry beauty is just impossible to ignore. She could be a supermodel or a Victoria Secrets model. She’s just stunning. Could she be Miss Universe? I am not sure if she’s ready for that. I think at the tender age of 18, she still needs to grow a bit more. If the judges base it just on her beauty, she could do really well.

CURACAO: ELINE DE POOL ****
I think Eline represented her country well. She has a lot of experience as a Sherri Hill model and that showed. She was one of the surprises of the night in the preliminaries. I especially loved her swimsuit performance and I think that alone could propel her to the semis! Keep an eye on her.
