The Miss USA 2012 Pageant took place on June 3rd at the Theater for the Perfoming Artist at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. At the conclusion of the event, Rhode Island's Olivia Culpo became the first representative of her state to win the title when she was crowned the 61st Miss USA. She beat 50 other delegates to win this prestigious title and will now start preparing for the Miss Universe Pageant in December.
Part of the fun of following pageants is to be one of the thousands of armchair judges. Before the pageant, we released our choices for the crown. A panel of preliminary judges (along with members of the Miss Universe Organization) selected their top 16 after the preliminary competition that was held four days before the final. The real judges agreed with 11 of our choices for the top 16, Texas, Georgia, Nevada, New Jersey, Maryland, Maine, Rhode Island, Alabama, Ohio, Louisiana, and Michigan. They also included Tennessee, Colorado, Oklahoma, and South Carolina. Arkansas was the surprise winner of the fan vote. Our biggest misses in the top 16 were definitely the delegates from Delaware and California.
First up was the swimsuit competition:
Tennessee: 8.70 - Her walk was quite lacklustre. She should have worked it more, like in the preliminaries.
Alabama: 8.90 - A gorgeous girl with an amazing body but her walk was just so weak. I was disappointed.
Ohio: 9.10 - Very sexy, confident, and relaxed.
Michigan: 9.00 - Amazing body!
Maryland: 9.20 - THE catwalk DIVA! Excellent walk!
New Jersey: 9.15 - Cute but fierce - worked it.
Texas: 9:05 - Great walk but "the stare" she had going bothered me.
Colorado: 8.60 - Trying too hard. Walked too fast, it felt rushed.
Oklahoma: 9.00 - Good walk. Different look - stood out!
Louisiana: 8.75 - Great body, average walk
Maine: 8.95 - great girl but her walked lacked energy
Georgia: 8.99 - Gorgeous girl, stunning body, boring walk!
South Carolina: 8.50 - She had clearly gone as far in the competition as she could have. Pretty face but one of the weaker bodies and sleepy walk.
Rhode Island: 8.92 - Gorgeous smile, lots of personality
Nevada: 9.15 - Sexiest of the bunch. Cool, calm, collected. Fierce.
Arkansas: 8.48 - Body not the best and walk just OK.
Based on this I would have advanced Ohio, Michigan, Maryland, New Jersey, Texas, Oklahoma, Maine, Georgia, Rhode Island, and Nevada. The real judges agreed with 8 of my choices. Alabama and Colorado was selected to be in the top 10 instead of Michigan and Maine.
Next up was the evening gown competition:
Alabama: 8.80 - She looked a bit stiff and robotic but her gown she was wearing a gorgeous gown.
Oklahoma: 9.00 - She looked great but I wish she had worn her hair totally up like in the preliminaries.
Ohio: 9.20 - Very regal. Gorgeous gown. Elegant.
Georgia: 9.00 - Sexy dress but disappointing walk!
Texas: 9.30 - Stunning girl but the stare still bothered me.
Colorado: 8.70 - Not too crazy about the gown but she was working it.
New Jersey: 9.10 - Beautiful gown and she was working it.
Maryland: 9.20 - Once again, Nana burned up the catwalk.
Rhode Island: 8.70 - Gorgeous face but I didn't like her gown at all.
Nevada: 9.30 - Loved her hair up. Very sexy gown, great walk.
My top 5 would have been Ohio, Texas, New Jersey, Maryland, and Nevada but the real judges included Rhode Island and Georgia instead of New Jersey and Texas.
Top 5 Final Question:
Georgia: 8.80 - She was confident in her delivery but she gave a very average answer. Could have done more with it.
Nevada: 9.30 - It was a silly question. Kudos to her for sticking up for her fellow competitors. Loved her confidence.
Rhode Island: 9.40 - She just won the night. Handled a very controversial question and potential "Youtube Moment" with a very dignified response.
Maryland: 8.90 - Her answer came across as a tad arrogant but it was a strong response.
Ohio: 8.60 - Totally bombed. Very weak answer.
So my final results would have been:
4th runner-up: Ohio (Judges: second runner-up)
3rd runner-up: Georgia (Judges: fourth runner-up)
2nd runner-up: Maryland (Judges: 1st runner-up)
1st runner-up: Nevada (Judges third runner-up)
Miss USA 2012: Rhode Island (Judges: Miss USA 2012)
